Sustainability

We strive to respect and protect all of God’s creation. For this reason, we encourage all our guests to enjoy and value the environment during their stay by considering the following actions:

Reduce, reuse, recycle

  • We can minimise energy use by turning off lights and air conditioners when not needed. Use only the fridges needed for your camp.
  • As a rural property Riyala uses bore water and we need to respect our groundwater supply and use water wisely by limiting showers.
  • Think about your plastic waste when making decisions about food packaging and use reusable bags and naturally wrapped food where possible.
  • Think about all the chemicals that we dispose of down drains as they end up in the groundwater and eventually in the Elizabeth River and Darwin Harbour. Consider using natural ingredients in detergents, soaps and shampoos.

Noise pollution

  • The tranquil nature of the rural area is easily lost by too much noise, especially at night. Please consider your fellow campers, natural residents and Riyala’s neighbours by practicing quiet activities at night and being quiet after 9pm.

Light pollution

  • Consider our nocturnal friends who only appreciate the moon as a night light
  • Please turn off all unneeded lights at night

Respect the wild residents

  • Please admire and respect all the native locals who call Riyala home
  • Do not approach wildlife and educate children to enjoy but not touch wildlife
  • Our toilet block is home to a number of residents. These include carpet snakes and green tree frogs. Neither of these will harm you if respected and left alone. Say “hello” and let the site mangers know if you need any assistance.
  • Our local mob of northern brush-tailed possums will often be seen, or heard, moving around the gardens, building rafters or on the rooves.
