Riyala was established in the early 1980’s as a camping facility to serve Darwin and the rural area. It is located approximately 45 km from Darwin on 20 acres of land, fronting the Elizabeth River in the vicinity of Noonamah. It is on a secluded natural bush bock on a private road.
“Riyala” means “clean running water” in Djambarrpuyngu, (one of the local Indigenous languages of North East Arnhem Land). The founders of Riyala, Clem and Joyce Gullick and Ian Morris had all worked on Elcho Island in North-east Arnhem Land before coming together to establish Riyala as a facility that would be available for all to find rest and recreation in the peaceful surrounds.
We acknowledge the Djerimanga people who are the traditional owners of the country where Riyala is located. We pay our respects to their elders, past and present. We are humbled by the knowledge and land management of the traditional owners of lands across the Northern Territory, and respect the land by implementing appropriate management and care of the animals and plants.
Riyala, a member of Christian Venues Association, has strong links with local church groups but does not operate exclusively for Christian organisations. The facilities continue to be used by a wide range of groups – local and interstate schools, scout groups, drama groups as well as for church camps and retreats.
